  • Impeccably researched and thoughtfully written, The Nature Fix is a great read. Florence Williams immerses herself in the subject by subjecting herself to one study after another about the effects of nature on human well-being. She makes her particular experience universally approachable through clear-eyed and heartfelt storytelling. The natural world has an awful lot to recommend it and Florence Williams expertly helps us understand why. We need to get outside, now we know why.
  • I know a little bit about the benefits of nature on our mental and physical health, but I learned so much more after reading this book. Florence Williams covers everything from "forest bathing" in Korea and Japan to biophilia (our preference to be amount nature) to the hanging gardens in Singapore to the benefits of river rafting for soldiers suffering from PTSD. I loved every bit of this book, and plan on getting outside everyday from now until the rest of my life. Turns out our health depends on it! Great storytelling, a very easy read. I've recommended it to several friends already.
  • Good all around book. Really makes youthink of things you havent thought of about nature, sounds and smells. This was a great read and had a bunch of facts and studies that were very interesting. The author also does a great job of trying to keep her opinion out and sticks to facts and results. This book covers everything from noise of city vs nature to weather putting pictures of nature around you has an effect on your stress levels. Very good read
  • Ever since I witnessed the beauty of the Grand Canyon, I was awestruck not only with its magnificent but it was a moment that allowed me to discover something enriching about absorbing Nature.
    Honestly, I found religion with Nature, that day on the north rim looking into the canyon below and across the surrounding landscape of beauty that somehow healed all of whatever stressors were in my life.

    Florence Williams novels, "The Nature Fix," and "The Three Day Effect," are essential reading for all humans who are stressed out, mentally and physically.
    She identifies specific studies in Japan, and Korea, along with American researchers discovering and describing the effects of absorbing nature.

    Florence Williams herself participated with others on various backpacking and hiking outings to reveals why it is essential for the body to absorb nature, no matter what your background or history of trauma, or, your social, economic environment.
    More importantly, it is a simplistic and easy way for humans to heal, by merely taking a walk in the woods for three days if not three days straight return visit, in my opinion, several times weekly.

    As an aspiring, unpublished author, the novel has strengthened my belief that I will continue my outdoor travels around the world focusing on the absorption of nature because creativity flows easier and more precise for the mind while healing the soul.
  • Interesting research. The author has done her homework, and her arguments are quite convincing. The question the reader will have to answer is one of applicability how do *I* do what the book suggests?

  • The content in this book is good. The author takes current research in the ecopsychology field and explains it in a way that every day people can understand it. Personally not a fan of the entire book being told as if the author is telling a story. It is a little dry, but that can be expected from a book that is summarizing research. I highly recommend this book for anyone that has an interest in have the environment affects people.

Growing up in a conservative, middle-class family in Texas, Claire Myers Owens sought adventure and freedom at an early age. At twenty years old, she left home and quickly found a community of like-minded free spirits
and intellectuals in New York’s Greenwich Village. There Owens wrote novels and short stories, including the controversial novel The Unpredictable Adventure A Comedy of Woman’s Independence, which was banned by
the New York Public Library for its “risqué” content. Drawn to ideals of selfactualization and creative freedom, Owens became a key figure in the Human Potential Movement along with founder Abraham Maslow and Aldous
Huxley, and became an ardent follower of Carl Jung. In her later years, Owens devoted her life to the practice of Zen Buddhism, moving to Rochester, NY, where she joined the Zen Center and studied under Roshi Philip Kapleau. She published her final book, Zen and the Lady, at the age of eighty-three.
Friedman’s rediscovery of Owens brings well-deserved attention to her little known yet extraordinary life and passionate spirit. Drawing upon autobiographies, letters, journals, and novels, Friedman chronicles Owens’s robust intellect and her tumultuous private life and, along the way, shows readers what makes her story significant. With very few role models in the early twentieth century, Owens blazed her own path of independence and enlightenment.
