  • "The MIND Diet Plan & Cookbook Recipes and Lifestyle Guidelines to Help Prevent Alzheimer's and Dementia" is a thoroughly- researched and very well-presented guide to help you improve cognition. "MIND" stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay--it's a combination of the Mediterranean Diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Foods to eat sparingly include red meats, butter, margarine, cheese, pastries/sweets, and fried/fast foods--foods high in saturated fat. Healthy Mind Foods include leafy greens, other vegetables, whole grains, berries, nuts, seafoods, poultry, beans and legumes, and vegetable oils. You will love the more than 75 recipes which feature dishes like these "Cherry-Oat Smoothies"; "Three-Bean and Vegetable Chili"; "Italian Wedding Soup"; "Mini Veggie Pot Pies"; "Rainbow Veggie Spring Rolls"; "Apple & Wild-Rice Stuffed Acorn Squash"; "Lemony Garlic Shrimp Scampi"; "Fish Tacos with Cabbage Slaw";"Honey Mustard Grilled Salmon"; "Orange Chicken and Broccoli Stir-Fry"; "Crispy Parmesan Chicken Tenders"; "Pumpkin Oatmeal Raisin Cookies"; and "Crustless Apple Pies". The 4-week meal plan includes a wide variety of foods and comes with helpful shopping lists for convenient meal prep. Author Julie Andrews, MS, RDN, CD, states that her goal is to "help you reduce your risk of Alzheimer's Disease and dementia while simultaneously building your skills in the kitchen, growing your love for cooking, and improving your relationship with food".

  • o let's summarize the important facts first. This book will provide you with more than 75 recipes and has a meal plan for four whole weeks included as well. The recipes cover all meals, snacks and sides. In addition to the nice touches such as shopping lists and detailed instructions on how to cook the recipes, the book also extends beyond a cookbook by providing guidance on how to live a healthy life that will aid and improve the mind. Just as exercises have been shown to enhance one's mental state and reduce the risk of dementia, so can certain foods enhance the mind. This book presents plenty of such as healthy recipes including desserts, smoothies, internationally-inspired entrees and side dishes. But the book also guides the reader to adopt a total lifestyle to support the mind. This manages to move from a mere good cookbook to a lifestyle guide that also has a lot of recipes.

I received a free copy of the book from the publisher.
  • From an explanation of the diet, to lists of recommended foods, to the grocery lists and recipes, this book has everything you need to get started with the MIND diet. I have a hard time with books that set you off on a plan without the tools you need to be successful, and they usually make you feel guilty if you cannot achieve the goals set by the diet.

I like Julie's up front attitude and that it's OK to start slow, "As you go through the meal plan, remember that it takes time to create new habits, and even if you don’t follow it to the letter, you can still improve your overall health and reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia by up to 53 percent!" This actually encourages me to try harder and stay with the plan.

Julie takes you through each food group, including proteins and explains what to look for, what to avoid and how they can help you. Explaining nutrients and the results to be had from consuming the right types of food. Overall, the best information on not just the "what" but the "why" of the food you should be eating.

The recipes are straight forward and don't require a culinary degree to understand the process and techniques to preparing them properly. The included meal plans are varied enough that even though I don't follow them to the letter they give me so many ideas to tailor the plan to all the foods that I like and even give me the excitement to try a few I haven't wanted to eat in a long time!

I look forward to tracking my results and to see how my cognitive functions improve! I also look forward to making my way through all the recipes to discover new favorites to add to my favorite meal lists! I found several already!
  • I've been following Julie at TheGourmetRD. com for a while and love her delicious, yet realistic approach to food and nutrition. The MIND Diet Plan & Cookbook is no different! Julie breaks down the science into easy-to-digest pieces and provides all the resources needed to get started. The "diet' is more of a lifestyle approach and features mostly plant-based whole foods, which I love! There are weekly meal plans and grocery lists, as well as 75+ recipes. So far I've tried the Sesame-Ginger Glazed Salmon and the Shrimp & Roasted Red Pepper Grits. Both were delicious!! Can't wait to try more!
